Dellums Watch: Keeping Tabs on Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums

Because we care deeply about Oakland, we want Mayor Dellums to succeed. However, we strongly opposed his election because he never held a municipal position in Oakland and has lived in Washington for the last thirty-five years. We are wary of some of his supporters, and wish to keep a close eye on local political machinations. This blog will be focused on politics and people, not policy perscriptions (unlike FutureOakland).

Allison staff steals Pat fliers right in front of me!

Last night, Pat Kernighan was invited by District 2 DJs and bar owners to visit several establishments in the Grand Lake and Park Blvd neighborhoods. As Pat was leaving the Easy Lounge, Aimee Allison and an orange-shirted entourage showed up to crash the party. Ms. Allison spent several hours hanging with the clubbers, dancing to hip-hop while dressed atrociously (she was wearing a black velvet blazer with large silver embossed buttons over a tea-length jersey gored skirt, black tights, and pumps with exaggerated toilet heels).

I noticed after awhile that the Pat Kernighan literature the bar's workers had put out seemed to be gone. Assuming that patrons picked it up, I placed a few more fliers on tables. As I was sitting and enjoying a drink with a companion around midnight, Allison staffer Alli Chagi-Starr, with Ms. Allison standing behind her and watching, scooped up the Pat fliers on the table in front of me and walked off with them. I gaped at her, and then saw a young woman run after Ms. Starr to demand that she put the fliers back. Ms. Starr said that it had been a mistake (which is absolutely untrue: I watched her steal them with my own eyes), and gave them back. The young woman was told by a man who appeared to be with the Allison campaign that "Pat is corporate," whatever that means. I assume it was a justification for thievery of campaign material, witnessed and therefore approved by Aimee Allison herself.

Why does it matter how a candidate was dressed? I would imagine if you asked Councilmember Kernighan if she thought it was part of a healthy debate on politics in Oakland for you to describe what the candidates were wearing and what you thought of it, she would say no.

How ridiculous to diminish Pat as "corporate." Classic anti-business nonsense spouted by childish idealistic lefty dreamers who don't understand public finance.

Well, who's gonna pay the taxes to run our city if people like Allison won't?

At October 27, 2006 8:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You guys are too much. She paid taxes, all her taxes, including taxes in and to the City of Oakland - the clause was that she failed (which she acknowledged) to pay Oakland business taxes on two (out of dozens) of clients in the past two years because of a misunderstanding in a reporting rule that lots of small businesses get wrong each year.

She screwed up - and that's something to take note of - but you guys act like she doesn't pay taxes and this was a major evasion. The total? $180. Come on.

At October 27, 2006 8:43 PM, Blogger Oakland Native said...

1st Anon: I don't think how Allison was dressed is a reason to vote for or gainst her, but perhaps her teenagery approach to style speaks something to her character. I want to draw a good picture, and I'm very interested in style.

3rd Anon: The Chronicle said that Allison didn't pay ANY taxes for four years, and that she did not have an active business license for the period. $180 is not an insignificant amount of local tax. Allison has yet to address this publicly.

At October 28, 2006 9:58 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, Allison has addressed the tax issue publicly, in three interviews and at a candidate forum.

Allison paid Oakland, California and US Taxes every year for the last four years - what she failed to pay (not okay, but not to the extent that you imply) were business taxes in the City of Oakland on independent contracting work with clients who were outside of Oakland. An honest mistake. She actually paid Oakland business taxes even - on Oakland clients - but the two (two out of dozens) clients outside Oakland she misunderstood the code and did not pay that business tax.

So again - not okay (she didn't think it was okay either) - but its a lie to say that she didn't pay taxes.

On the clothing thing, are you really saying that you wouldn't call it "negative" or be outraged if you found some blog that talked disparagingly about how Pat and/or her campaigners we're dressed. You would go CRAZY!

At October 28, 2006 4:50 PM, Blogger Oakland Native said...

I have not heard these defenses from Allison herself. The Chron article implies that there was an entire category of business license tax that she ceased paying for four years. I don't think she needs punishment, but it's no good and underscores the self-defeating nature of her anti-business positions. Pat is pro-business because businesses pay taxes and generate jobs, things that are needed in Oakland, as she said on KPFA yesterday.

I did not describe the clothes of the Allison supporters beyond noting that almost all wore safety-beacon orange (which I find off-putting and unpersuasive). I wouldn't be upset if somebody talked about Pat's simple pantsuits. I doubt I'd comment on it.

This blog is not about Allison's hypocrisy - I'll leave that to the East Bay Express. This blog is about the rude nature of the AA campaign, and that it's fully endorsed by the lady at the top.

Does anyone know of a blog that tells what Dellums is up to? I am not really that interested in reading about Allison.

Dellums isn't really doing anything exciting right now. Of course, you can read about some of his activities in the newspaper - for example, he commendably convinced OakPac to abide by Oakland's campaign finance laws despite the fact they were struck down by a federal judge (ironic, considering he himself broke the campaign spending limit without consequence in his Mayoral campaign), and helped avert an East Bay garbage strike. He has also hosted four neighbor to neighor dialogues, but I have been unable to attend any since they were all scheduled during times when I had previous commitments. Hopefully, he will schedule more in the coming weeks.

OaklandGurl -

That's a pretty shocking allegation. As much as I dislike Allison, I have a difficult time believing that she would go so far as to promise people money in exchange for votes.

At October 29, 2006 11:41 AM, Blogger Oakland Native said...

I think that it's very possible that Allison is promising things she can't deliver to poor people in San Antonio. Her ridiculous estimates of what she could get from the Port, if distributed to Oakland's poor, would amount to thousands of dollars per person. I am not suprised that she's talking about her plans for increased social spending in ways that could be misinterpreted by many residents.

At October 29, 2006 7:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oakland Native, you are insane. Possibly clinically insane. Aimee Allison has about half the money Pat Kernighan does now; the idea that she is offering $1000 for a VOTE is completely preposterous.

Oaklandgurl you might consider the source - a Pat Kernighan volunteer! Yes, its outrageous, and someone SHOULD look into it - particularly why any volunteer on any campaign would spread a lie like that.

What OakPAC wanted to spend amounted to almost $100 a voter though - where is the outrage over that?

At October 30, 2006 2:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why haven't Dellums and Barbara Lee come out in support of Pat? They're in the same party. You raise a good point but it cuts both ways ... there is something about Pat that Dellums and Barbara don;t like either.

And to correct Oaklandgurl, the latest article from the 26th showed Kernighan with a weighty money advantage, with over half the money from corporations and developers. It was Heather McDonalds piece the 25th or 26th that detailed the $$$.

At October 30, 2006 3:28 PM, Blogger Oakland Native said...

Allison's campaign asserts that 51% of Pat's donations came from developers or "lawyers." Allison, of course, has collected substantial contributions from SFers, who are much more odious to Oaklanders than, say John Protopappas (who redeveloped the Trib Tower, without city subsidies, after it was red-tagged in '89). San Francisco doesn't want to compete with a retail revitalization in Oakland, and that's why it's so easy for them to give to an inexperienced, anti-growth ideologue.

Dellums is definitely doing the right thing by not endorsing either candidate (I appreciate that he defused the OakPAC situation, as well). By promising to work with whoever wins, he takes away from Allison's raison d'etre. Senator Barbara Boxer, who recently moved to Jack London Square, made a passionate endorsement of Pat Kernighan last week.

At October 31, 2006 10:01 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Indeed, one of Allison's major platform planks is "support Dellums." She's also touted her role in the draft Dellums effort, and at least has some supporters trying very hard to give the impression there's a formal connection there.

It makes sense that Pat doesn't get Dellums endorsement--she supported Ignacio for Mayor! Politics 101, son.

At October 31, 2006 12:01 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pat actually has more "out of Oakland" contributors than Aimee by percentage and total dollars.

Its cute how often people post things without asking candidates their real positions (Aimee Allison didn't support Nader and wasn't a green in 2000) or without checking the facts (ie the donation stuff - Pat does draw over half from corporations and developers ... and more $$$$ from non-Oaklanders, including those insidious San Franciscans)

Can you provide some proof of your assertions about Pat's contributions? I've never seen that claim made anywhere except by Allison and her supporters.

Re: the party issue (im a different anonymous than the other one - how do you create a screen name on here!?) as much as people make an issue of party nationally, in a race like this is certainly a different issue.

the reality is that aimee allison, ideologically, is in line with Dellums and Nadel - who 65% of the District voted for. If you look at who is supporting each of them, Allison -- green, dem, or whatever the hell she is -- is more in line with the voters in District Two than Kernighan

At November 01, 2006 10:39 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

For the anonymous above: the person who is elected is the person who represents District 2 voters. Sadly for you all, you don't get to infer anything from previous voting patterns. I'll go out on a limb and say, "I know Ron Dellums, and Aimee Allison is no Ron Dellums."

How soon we forget: Aimee Allison is a Green because in the first election she needed a base of support. She declared her candidacy and during a visit to the Oakland Greens, where they asked her if she'd register for their endorsement, she agreed. This is common knowledge. I don't think that anyone could argue that Aimee is anythin but completely in line with the 10 principles of the Green Party, so it's a fit, but what I write above is the actual reason for her registration with the Greens.

Well Pat is no Ron Dellums either ... or Nancy Nadel. Two dems (plus Barbara Lee) refusing to support a longtime Dem in their own backyard? Doesn't look good. 2/3 of a district voting for progressives who agree with Allison on almost every issue, regardless of party affiliation - there is something too that.

Also a reminder: This is a nonpartisan seat and a nonpartisan race.

I strongly disagree that 2/3rds of District 2 agrees with Allison that we should stop downtown redevelopment, give up on attracting quality retail, shrink the police department, curtail Port expansion, and ignore the needs of neighborhoods in favor of broad national issues. We'll see that next week.

Pat is more in tune with Dellums than Allison. Dellums trotted out his developer friends for the business media all summer, his only Council ally stopped the condo supertax that Allison loves, and he certainly is down with downtown redevelopment. Allison's extremist rhetoric and absurdly anti-growth agenda is way out of step with Dellums' vision of 100k new residents and workers.

At November 01, 2006 11:55 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good spin - not true:
"Stop downtown redevelopment" - Aimee is in favor of a comprehensive economic development plan, something that Oakland (amazingly enough) doesn't have. Does anyone on here think that its okay Oakland doesn't have a clear vision for how its attracting development>

"Shrink the police department," - She has never said that. Her position (and Pat's for that matter) are to get a better contract, MORE walking officers, and to make sure the chief can deploy officers where and when they're needed.

"Curtail Port expansion," again, never said that, not true. She wants to tax the Port - Pat agrees, but Pat says that we're powerless to do anything about it. Does anyone on here think its okay that 40% of kids in West Oakland has asthma? that's the port's burden on public health costs in Oakland and the state.

"ignore the needs of neighborhoods in favor of broad national issues." - now you're just being dramatic. Her website, literature, etc dont talk about national issues.

at least debate real policy points if you want to swing people - don't make it up.

At November 01, 2006 12:08 PM, Blogger Oakland Native said...

The Montclarion: "Aimee Allison wants to stop spending dollars on downtown redevelopment." She has repeatedly denigrated Pat's attempts to lure retail to Oakland, and has publicly said that she's against out-of-town corporations (ie, all major retailers) moving here.

AA told the Monthly Review that the police department receives far too much money, implying that she wants to cut it. She has suggested spending the police dept's money on city grants for non-profit outreach groups, such as Education Not Incarceration, whose director Jonah Zern is shilling for Allison daily on IndyMedia.

The Port, which is a public entity, not a private corporation, has no "profits" to tax. All "excess" revenue, by state law, goes to expansion. If Allison takes money away, that's coming directly from airport and seaport expansion. Your rhetoric betrays your attitude, Anonymous - you blame the Port for asthma in West Oakland, and want to close it. The Port is our economic engine. We can deal with health issues without stopping its expansion.

If you think Allison is not talking about broad national issues, you are paying no attention to the race at all. Most of the above info is in my blog Aimee Allison's Real Positions.

Some citations:

The Monclarion article which says Allison opposes downtown redevelopment (of course she does, she's against all development and everything that Jerry Brown started) is here.

Allison's Monthly Review (an international socialist publication) article is here.

Here's Allison's most recent blog (Oct 29), in which she basically says that Halliburton is making money off of East Oakland's poverty. Talk about broad!

Dellums and Barbara Lee are not the only Democrats in town, Anonymous. You need to point them out because the overwhelming majority of Democratic politicians who represnt Oakland, as well as the actual Alameda County Democratic Party, support Pat.

Other major elements of the Democratic coalition, like labor, are going for Allison, and that has more to do with Danny Wan's dastardly move on the Port Living Wage than with anything Pat has actually done, or failed to do.

My friend and I were recently discussing about how technology has become so integrated in our day to day lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory falls, the possibility of uploading our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I daydream about every once in a while.
