Introduction
I am an Oakland native who is absolutely incensed by the candidacy of Ron Dellums for Oakland mayor. As a politican-turned-lobbyist he has not lived in Oakland for almost thirty years and is completely out of touch with the city as it is today. From engineering the special election of his chief of staff to his old seat, to his hypocritical embrace of "change" while collecting money from Elihu Harris's cronies and the city employee unions, this man has no respect for the electorate or any grasp of the very real issues facing the great City of Oakland.
This blog will be dedicated to uncovering the real, and wrong-headed, positions behind his lofty rhetoric.

I agree, deckin, that the media is overhyping Dellums's campaign. He hasn't been on the ballot in a decade, and Oakland is a youthful, growing city full of people who never voted for him. In addition, he is making a fool out of himself. The oft-quoted "polls" that show him in the lead are illusory; the only poll I have ever seen was done by the Oaksterdam News and found that Measure Z was Oaklanders' number one concern, which is obviously wrong.
Re competitive elections: you are completely right. In fact, didn't Dellums unseat a Republican? That was an easy task in 1968 Oakland. The fact that he resigned early (for no reason), forcing a special election indicates that he had no confidence that Barbara Lee would have won the open seat. Although Dellums's team of Washington insiders are sure good at throwing out the campaign vitriol.
I am in my mid-twenties and most of my friends are newcomers to Oakland. I am astounded by the degree of consensus there is on certain key city issues. Everyone is strongly in favor of downtown development, seeing that it provides them jobs, something to do, and entreprenuerial opportunities. They moved to a big, growing city from places like Detroit or Portland precisely for the growth. And they are completely past the petty racial politics of the 60s generation.
The other issue on which young people are remarkably united is the need to increase police presence downtown. From art gallery owners to leftist bartenders, every single young person wants to see more cops, a position not shared by Nadel or Dellums.
As long as they don't get ticketed for smoking.
I'll suffer through having to go outside to smoke if it means I feel safer walking home at night.
Correction: Dellums unseated a pro-Vietnam War Democrat in 1970 in the primary. He was then a Berkeley citycouncilman, his first elected office (he held appointed positions at the SF Redevelopment Agency in the 60s).
